Why Carbon Neutrality Matters in Food Businesses

“Responsible Seafood Begins with Carbon Awareness”

In today’s food industry, achieving carbon neutrality is no longer optional — it’s a responsibility. Every stage of food production — from raw materials and packaging to refrigeration and logistics — contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions.

The seafood sector faces unique challenges due to energy-intensive cold chains and transportation. By measuring and reducing emissions, producers not only protect the planet but also build trust with global consumers who expect sustainable and transparent supply chains.

For NUSATUNA, carbon neutrality is a cornerstone of our commitment to responsible seafood — ensuring that what we produce today supports the health of oceans, communities, and future generations.

Blane Olson’s Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

In alignment with our commitment to transparency and environmental stewardship,

I have led my team at NUSATUNA to continuously monitor and report our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions as part of our broader sustainability strategy.

In 2024 my team and I implemented Carbon Monitoring software from ZEROe based in Dubai. Based on a dashboard system modified to profile our seafood business, we were able to input all of our carbon (GHG) usages on a real time basis. We used a number of international databases to determine the carbon equivalencies for everything from freon use to motorbikes used by our staff to come to the factory. In 2025 we went real time and were able to produce hard numbers.

During the first quarter of 2025 (January–March), our total emissions at PT. Samudra Ulam Nusantara (PT. SAUL) amounted to 1,251.99 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) — a key benchmark in our ongoing journey toward carbon neutrality.

Our emissions profile revealed

  • 502.76 tCO₂e from fugitive      emissions within our refrigeration systems — our largest single      contributor.
  • 491.74 tCO₂e from purchased      goods and services, emphasizing the role of responsible sourcing in      our value chain.
  • 175.95 tCO₂e from purchased      energy,
  • 27.11 tCO₂e from upstream      transportation, and
  • 25.07 tCO₂e from downstream      distribution.

These insights highlight the specific areas where we continue to implement targeted emission-reduction strategies, such as:

  • Transitioning to low-GWP      refrigerants and enhanced leak detection systems,
  • Partnering with suppliers who      share our sustainability standards,
  • Expanding use of renewable      energy sources, and
  • Optimizing logistics to reduce      fuel consumption.

NUSATUNA remains fully dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality and actively managing emissions across all operations. This work directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) and aligns with international standards for climate reporting — ensuring that our sustainability actions are both measurable and transparent.
